Whitman College in Washington encourages freshman to participate in at least on Outdoor Program for free through the Bob Carson Outdoor Program Fund. The Outdoor Programs also provides hands-on experience by hiring students for a variety of positions. The college emphasized Global Studies through out the curriculum and sponsors an annual Global Studies Symposium. The Semester in the West allows students to earn a full semester of credit including courses in politics, biology, writing, and interdisciplinary studies. Students can apply for Whitman Internship Grants to develop their own internships. The Whitman Community Fellow Program is a year-long program that allows students to work with local organizations to deal with community problems and gain leadership experience.
